2009 for IT Decision Makers - Information Security & Beyond

The most important choice in 2009 for IT decision-makers will not be - what is the "coolest" new web 2.x technology to implement; however, the most important decision will be how to integrate the technologies of the past and be flexible for the future. Corporate and government organizations, during 2008 and prior, were busy implementing and purchasing emerging technologies: new content management solutions, Enterprise 2.x technologies, elaborate collaboration suites, robust information security & privacy controls, and state of the art policy/compliance automation.

In 2009, you will see corporations and governments succeed (or fail) based on how well they plan, budget, and implement integrated solutions around their technologies AND business processes. Although not flashy or aww-inspiring, organizations that focus on integrated technical solutions around enabling their businesses, instead of supporting their business, will be the most influential in their respective industries.

Overall, IT spending will remain consistent in the first half of 2009 with a significant (but not drastic) increase in the 2nd half of the year. This will be caused by a change in the Federal Administration and corporations taking a step back to re-evaluate & re-prioritize their initiatives.

However, organizations will continue to increase their security spending. The IT decision makers that are informed and understand the potential business, financial, and reputation risks of a lackluster security infrastructure will be the "superheroes" of their industries. As a result of the difficulty in quantifying security ROI, most organizations' security budgets will not be adequate to handle all needed initiatives.

Within both sectors, you will see increased spending in implementing both functional and technical Security-as a-Service capabilities, managing vulnerabilities, and an increased focus on protecting organizations' data layers. In addition, within the Federal sector, you will see increased security spending around secure enterprise architecture, incident identification, incident response, and compliance automation.

Although security training spending may continue to be overlooked in 2009 it is a key component of a successful organization. All employees, from the IT division to the corporate spokesperson to the finance and contracts groups, have a stake and a responsibility in protecting their organizations. Organizations should effectively train their employees on each person's day to day potential impact, responsibility, and what to do if an incident occurred.
